Screen aspect ratio

Last updated:

If you use Classroomscreen on different devices, setting a fixed screen aspect ratio will make sure your widgets stay in the right place when you need them to. Here's how you can set it in your screen settings.

What is screen aspect ratio?

Screen aspect ratio refers to the shape your screen takes on your monitor - how wide it is compared to how tall it is. It affects how the screens you display, while in Classroomscreen, fit and look on your device. You can adjust the aspect ratio via the Options menu in each screen by clicking on Settings - from there, you can choose between different aspect ratio options to customize how your screens look.

note:

Once you select an aspect ratio, it will automatically be applied to the screen you're currently using. To make sure your preference is applied to any new screens you create, you can change the Default aspect ratio. This setting ensures that your selection is automatically used for new screens.

Which option should I choose?

We provide a few different aspect ratio choices, each suited for different types of use cases. Let's break them down:

Fill screen

Recommended for consistent screen sizes

This is the default aspect ratio setting. If you typically use Classroomscreen on the same device or screen with a consistent size, this option works best. Selecting Fill screen will make what you display in Classroomscreen take up the full space of your browser window. However, if you notice widgets shifting or becoming distorted while in this mode, it may be time to switch to one of the fixed aspect ratios—either 4:3 or 16:9.

Fixed 4:3

Ideal for varying screen sizes

If you regularly switch between different screens or project Classroomscreen onto various devices with varying screen sizes, Fixed 4:3 is a great option. This aspect ratio adjusts the display to resemble a more square shape, meaning there will be borders either at the top and bottom or on the left and right of your screen. These borders are essentially unused space and may affect how you place your widgets.

Fixed 16:9

Suitable for wide screens and projectors

Similarly, if you're using Classroomscreen on different screens or projectors, Fixed 16:9 can be a helpful option. This aspect ratio makes your background appear more rectangular. Just like with the 4:3 ratio, there will be borders either at the top and bottom or on the sides of your display. The border areas will remain empty, so you will have a specific area to work in when using this setting.

Applying aspect ratios across screens

If you're working with multiple screens in a deck in Classroomscreen, you can apply the chosen aspect ratio to all of them. After adjusting the screen aspect ratio for the current display, simply click on 'Apply to all screens' to ensure every screen in that deck adopts your preferred setting.

How can I stop widgets from moving when I change screens?

If you notice that widgets are shifting around or not displaying as expected when you switch devices, share decks, or project onto a whiteboard, this can often be solved by changing your aspect ratio setting. If you're currently using Fill Screen, try switching to either Fixed 4:3 or Fixed 16:9. After this, rearrange your widgets into the correct positions, and from that point on, your screen will display correctly on any device or projector.

tip:

We recommend setting a fixed aspect ratio (either 4:3 or 16:9) as your default for all new screens to avoid these issues in the future.
