About this template

Help students master common English verb + noun and verb + preposition combinations with this fun and interactive tic-tac-toe game

Designed for intermediate ESL learners, this activity boosts speaking fluency, reinforces grammar, and builds confidence through structured output and friendly competition.

How it works

  1. Divide students into two teams using the Group maker widget.
  2. A student selects a box with a phrase (e.g., “my homework”).
  3. They choose the correct verb (e.g., “tell”) to form the collocation (“tell someone a story”). The student uses the collocation in a full sentence.
  4. If the sentence is correct, their team claims the square. The first team to get three squares in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) wins!
